Frank's Story

FRANK S, MD, 69, is a retired army colonel, who was drafted during the Vietnam War, where he became a pioneer in battlefield surgery and visionary cardiothoracic surgeon when he returned stateside.

A widower of 30 years, having lost his wife to Pancreatic Cancer 30 years ago, Frank never remarried, his world now revolving around his work, his son, who is currently deployed as a Marine in Afghanistan, and his many interests and (mostly solo) hobbies.  Surgeon, SCUBA diver, and glider pilot, this alpha male personifies the words master and commander in every possible way…and he’s a Texan.

Frank’s world explodes when he suffers a massive coronary upon learning that his son has been killed.  He is resuscitated by his team but winds up in the intensive care unit in critical condition, initially requiring the use of a ventilator to breathe.

Frank must undergo the same cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program that he had prescribed for patients hundreds of times in the past. Deeply despondent, he is resistant to the rehabilitation process, asking over and over again, why they didn’t “just let me go."
